Community Group Intern
Originally from a small beach town in North Florida, Will Tant traveled the world as a professional surfer for 15 years. He moved to Harlem in 2007 and is now a student at Columbia University. Will began attending Redeemer shortly after moving to the city and became a Christian within a Redeemer Community Group. “Within this group, I began to understand the difference between the Gospel and religion,” says Will. “Seeing how God has reshaped me and my friends within community is unbelievable. It is a true testament to a power that is mightier than this world and grounded in love and self-sacrifice.”
With this kind of history with Community Groups, it’s fitting that Will joined our staff as a Community Group Intern in July 2012. He now assists our Community Group Leaders, making sure they receive the needed support and resources. “Everyday I have the opportunity to see and hear about lives that have been changed by the Gospel,” he says. Will can often be found having a burger and milkshake at Shake Shack or grabbing a cookie at Momofuko Milk Bar. He enjoys swimming and still surfs at least once a week.
Fun Will Fact: “I am a coffee snob. Somehow Starbucks is no longer good enough for me.”
One recent weekend morning I was riding my bike on the loop in Central Park. As it turned out I was joined by hundreds of runners participating in a New York Road Runner’s race. As the various runners, walkers and riders were making their way through the park, a lone woman stood on the side playing the theme song from Rocky on her violin. At first it struck me as comical, but as I rode away I realized that this young woman was offering those in the race the gift of encouragement. And as that theme song sunk into my own psyche I smiled and pedaled harder.
The gift of encouragement is important and powerful in our daily lives. It is why the Bible is constantly reminding us to affirm and encourage one another. John Stott puts it this way, "God means his church to be a community of mutual support…'encourage one another,' and 'build one another up' (1 Thess 5:11)…caring, encouraging and comforting are ministries which belong to all members of the Body of Christ."
As the woman on the violin reminded me, it doesn’t take much to encourage someone, just the willingness to put the concerns of others ahead of your own.
Be kind and compassionate to one another – Ephesians 4:32
