Subject: East Side Update- November 25
25 November 2012
Abby was born in Seoul, South Korea, adopted at 9 months old and raised in the Midwest on pizza and apple pie. Nine years ago, she moved to NYC and quickly realized that despite the (true!) statement that "you can take the girl out of the Midwest, but you can't take the Midwest out of the girl," she had found her new home. Having scoped out the city on multiple business trips before her permanent move, she knew straight away that Redeemer would be her church family and started attending the first Sunday she was here. Over the years, she has met three life-long best friends in various Community Groups and her husband, Steve Hoppe, serving dinner at the Bowery Mission through Hope For New York. She is the proud mother of a 5lb. puppy named Beatrice, and is really into geeking out on theology, "dinner-and-a-movie", and dragging her husband to vegan restaurants.
As children, my brother and I had the luxury of a lavish Christmas. So when my mother explained to me one year that other children did not receive toys for Christmas like we did, I was shocked. She took me to a nearby store and we pulled a paper angel off a tree with the name and age of a child in our community. She explained to me that these children had parents who could not afford to buy them Christmas presents and said it was up to us to do so.
Hope for New York offers a similar opportunity for New Yorkers each holiday. His Toy Store sets up several toy stores in low income neighborhoods to provide toys to 1,400 families in the city. This program allows families in need and their children to make lasting connections to local churches where they “shop” for toys. By December 2nd, His Toy Store needs 4,000 toys and it is easy to give. You can give online through the Amazon Wishlist or by bringing toys to next week’s December 2nd services. Please help bring a child joy this holiday season who may not otherwise have that opportunity.
