Sunday Service Ministries
Phoebe Kmeck was born and raised on the UWS, but spent her childhood on and off the road, following the whims of her parents' acting careers. She started coming to Redeemer when she was 12 and accepted Christ on a Youth Group ski trip. Phoebe joined Redeemer staff in 2004, and now oversees our West Side Sunday Service Ministries leaders and volunteers—including the Ushers, Welcome Center Greeters, and Information Center, Book Table and Communion Teams. Phoebe says, "It's an honor to work alongside the volunteers and witness Jesus revealing himself in their actions and servant hearts."
Phoebe's transient upbringing resembled her hot and cold relationship with God. "Regardless of my inconsistent faith," says Phoebe, "God showed me through his provision of community at Redeemer that he is my life's only anchor and the only semblance of stability I can trust in this ever-changing world and city."
Fun Phoebe Fact: She's a singer/songwriter under the name Phoebe Lyng. You can find her music on iTunes and the Redeemer Forum for Singer-Songwriters CD for HFNY, In the City.
Every weekday morning I take my 7-year-old daughter to her school bus on my ‘scooter’ (Yes, I have a scooter, or more accurately, a XOOTR!). On a recent rainy morning I decided I would ignore the elements and transport her while holding an umbrella in one hand and steering with another. Some of you already know what is coming, but yes, halfway there we fell. She got a scraped knee, me–a busted up face and wounded ego. For the next week every time I looked in the mirror I was reminded of a basic fact of life–there are consequences to foolishness! Of course the Bible reminds us of this constantly, exhorting its readers to trust God’s wisdom even when it seems alien to our desires and instincts. This means remembering that wisdom is not just knowing the right thing to do, but acting on that knowledge. I certainly knew better than to risk riding a scooter one handed in the rain. My prayer is that our community would both study and trust God’s wise word in our daily lives, so we not only avoid the pain that comes from ignoring him, but celebrate and model his loving wisdom to a watching world.

Volunteers Live Longer
The Great BIG Volunteer Sign up continues...
We are celebrating Sunday’s launch of the Downtown congregation and sending a big thank you to the 34 new volunteers who've already signed up to fill gaps on the West Side! These new volunteers will be basking in blessings that include: 1) a free mp3 sermon subscription and 2) deeper connection to community–but also, according to Health Psychology, volunteering will prolong their life. We are looking for 100 volunteers–there are opportunities for ALL, whatever personality. Please consider serving with Sunday Service Ministries and email Phoebe (featured in this week's West Side Story). Or serve with the Children’s Ministry and email Amy for info. We need you!
