Hello ,

As a parent of a child who has entered the world of nightly homework and weekly tests, I have begun to experience the growing anxiety of wanting my daughter to"‘succeed." Of course there is nothing wrong with wanting your child or loved one to do well, but a recent article in the Washington Post about a cheating scandal at Harvard (When Ambition Trumps Ethics) reminded me of the need to shift my focus to my daughter’s internal success. As the Harvard professor who wrote the article stated, focusing only on external results leaves us with, "hollowness at the core."

Following Jesus means remembering that growth and success in the Christian life is best characterized by fruitfulness in our inner spirit. Jesus told his disciples to "bear much fruit" (John 15:8). This means we are to tend to our own "core" to make sure we are growing in Godly character. May we be a community that grows and excels in godliness, relying on the grace of God and the power of his Spirit to bear the fruit of the gospel of Jesus.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. – Galatians 5:22-25

In Christ,

Rev. David Bisgrove
