Dear ,

One of the best parts of my job is working with our Hope for New York volunteers to share their testimonies at Redeemer- volunteers like Leslie, who shared today on the East Side.

The thing that’s so encouraging to me about our volunteer testimonies isn’t just that these busy and well-educated New Yorkers are making time to “give back,” or that they’re learning important lessons about people who are different from them, or that they’re having such tremendous impact in the lives of those they’re serving. While all of that is really important, I’m most encouraged by these volunteer testimonies because they’re all stories of God’s grace at work.

These volunteers have experienced the grace and healing of God to such an extent in their lives that they, compelled by gratitude to God for the gift of Christ and trusting in God’s power to equip them and sustain them, are looking to extend that grace to the poor, the sick, the hopeless. This kind of service is so much more than “giving back”— it’s this beautiful picture of a God-driven inner change wrought outward.

We pray that more and more people at Redeemer would have volunteer stories like Leslie’s. If you’re interested in finding out how you can serve, visit us at www.hfny.org/volunteer, or send us an e-mail at volunteer@hfny.org.

In Christ,

SSM Harbor Lights Cruise
As a farewell to summer, the East Side Sunday Service Ministries volunteers and friends gathered on the last Thursday in August to enjoy Circle Line Cruise’s Harbor Lights Cruise. As the ship sailed around the southern tip of Manhattan, a guide pointed out various historically and anecdotally significant sites on the island. The SSM volunteers’ two-hour tour was blessed by “absolutely perfect” weather as well as relaxing fellowship.
