Subject: West Side Update - September 10
September 10, 2012
Monica Philippo and her Redeemer Community Group began volunteering with Hope for New York in the Fall of 2011. They chose a HFNY affiliate on the UWS, Project Find – Hargrave Senior Center, which is a community center for low-income and homeless seniors. “Redeemer's vision is to love and serve the City, and the thing we've always been challenged by as a group is how do we love and serve the neighborhood we're in?” says Monica.
The group teams up with a second Community Group and volunteers once every six weeks. Some serve in the kitchen, some bring the food out to the seniors, and they all work to put on special programs at Christmas and Easter. The seniors at Hargrave are aged 60 and over and practice various faiths.
“You meet all these great New Yorkers who are retired and have really awesome stories. I love chatting with them and seeing a different view of New York,” says Monica. “I have bumped into seniors from Hargrave during the week. I think that's probably the best part, to be able to see them when I’m going to the grocery store.”
Monica is originally from Hong Kong and moved to Queens when she was eight years old. When she and her husband, Tim, were married in 2001, they moved out to NJ. But during the 2005 Vision Campaign, they moved to the UWS so they could live in the same neighborhood as their church and be closer to work.
Monica is a Producer at the American Museum of Natural History’s Educational Department. She first attended Redeemer in 1997 and has at times served as a Community Group Leader, Community Group Leader Coach and Usher. This past May, she became a Deaconess.
Serving at Hargrave has helped Monica and her group to focus not only on supporting each other within the group but also on what it means to love their neighbors. “It makes us more aware of our surroundings and helps us see people as made in God’s image,” says Monica. “Volunteering at Hargrave has given us more confidence in approaching more people on the street who might be in need, and not ignoring them. It’s that combination of boldness and graciousness.”

It was 5:30AM (yes AM!!) when my 7-year-old daughter came into our room last week. She was so excited about getting back to school that she couldn’t sleep. For our daughter the main source of her excitement was a desire to see her friends. She couldn’t wait to reconnect with them after the long break and tell them all about her summer. It is a great reminder of the importance of friendship and community.
As we begin our first full ministry year as a congregation, there will be both familiar and new faces sitting next to us in the sanctuary and gathered at coffee hour on the 5th floor. In the upcoming weeks, we have an opportunity to answer the call to community in two important ways. First, we can take time on Sundays not only to connect with old friends, but also to reach out to those who might be sitting or standing alone. NYC can be a tough place to make friends and feel connected, so we all need to practice hospitality. Secondly, for all of us who haven't yet joined a community group, the fall is a great time to join a beta group (click here to sign up.) In a church as big as Redeemer and in a city as transient and frenetic as New York, it is critical to find ways to connect with smaller groups to create friendships and explore our faith together. So take a chance and sign up for a 7-Week Beta Group. It will be the best investment you make this fall!
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. – 1 Peter 4:9-10
