Suna Chung is from Winnipeg, Canada. She’s lived in NYC for 10 years, always in the same apartment. “I really like the neighborhood and it’s a sixth floor walk-up, so these are two good reasons to stay put,” says Suna.

Suna’s a pianist who teaches at CUNY Lehman College. She also has a small studio of private students, and she recently started an art song concert series housed in the Village area. When she and another musician friend moved to NYC, the UWS was their first choice because many musicians live in the neighborhood. “We had no furniture and no money, so we sat on the floor for a while, shared a bedroom, and took on a third roommate,” Suna says. “As the years passed, it was just the two of us, then she moved away. Now the church is my neighbor. So it’s been one apartment but it has had many different faces.”

At Redeemer, Suna’s been in a number of community groups, served as an usher and community group host, and most recently participated in CFW’s Gotham Fellowship. “These tight-knit communities have been a pivotal part of my ‘upbringing’ in the city,” she says.

“One of my favorite bible verses is ‘We walk by faith, not by sight,’” says Suna. “It’s a reminder that what I call reality is often based on this world, its measures and its predictors. But, God sees across time, through desires, with perfect justice and wisdom. We’re not working with the same information.”   
Hello ,

Ice cream cones. Crashing waves. Bicycle rides. Porch breezes. Laughing children. These are words that most of us can define and maybe even visualize. But as I sit on a wicker rocking chair writing these words from a house just a few hundred yards from the Atlantic Ocean, all of these words have a deeper meaning for me because I have experienced every one of them today with my family. This is a reminder that words convey their deepest meaning when they are not just something we know intellectually, but experience personally.

Similarly, many people can define words like redemption, grace, cross, repentance, joy and hope. But to a Christian they are so much more than theological and spiritual concepts. They point to and find their ultimate meaning in a personal life changing relationship with Jesus, the "word made flesh" (John 1:14).

As we gear up for another busy season of ministry, it is important to remember that all of our planning and activity in the end should deepen our relationship with that “Word.” I hope we will regularly pray for one another Paul’s prayer below as we continue seeking ways to make Jesus real to each another and our surrounding community.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:16-19

Pack/Distribute Food Pantry Bags | NYC Rescue Mission
Friday, August 17 from 7:30PM-9:15PM or Saturday, August 18 from 9:45AM-12PM | 90 Lafayette St.

During the third weekend of each month, volunteers are needed at the New York City Rescue Mission (90 Lafayette Street) to help pack (on Friday) and distribute (on Saturday) food pantry bags to very low income residents. Contact nycrescuemission@gmail.com.

Activity Night at Citi Field | Bowery Mission Transitional Center
Wednesday, August 26 from 6:30PM-8:30PM | Citi Field
Male volunteers needed to take residents from Bowery Mission Transitional Center on an outing to Citi Field. This is a great opportunity to make friendships with and encourage men who are recovering from addiction. Contact Ebi at hfny.bmtc@gmail.com.

Events
Upcoming Counseling Seminars and Groups for Men and Women
Redeemer Counseling is offering resources for those seeking gospel-centered healing in the context of community. On Wednesday August 22 and Wednesday August 29, there will be a two-part men’s seminar on sexual integrity. On Thursday August 30, there will be a seminar for wives of husbands struggling with pornography. In September, intensive counseling groups called “Renewal Groups” will be launched for these two topics. Other groups will address grief recovery, sexual abuse recovery, and strengthening relationships. Registration is now open.
