Ben Schmid

"In 2008 I moved to the city after graduating from Rutgers and soon began to attend Redeemer on a regular basis. Despite my involvement in the downtown church I confess I am more of your standard "NYC-midtown-finance-guy" who admittedly often neither feels cool enough nor oriented enough downtown (thank you Google Maps)! However, there is a rich harvest downtown and the workers are few. It is into this type of unknown enviroment that God often calls His people so my involvement with the downtown church is in response to this…working alongside Pastor John Lin and many others as we seek to advance Redeemer's vision of a renewed city."

Dear ,

It's amazing that the summer is flying by so quickly and the fall will be upon us soon!

As you may be aware, for our Downtown staff team, this summer has been all about preparing for a fall launch of our congregation. There has been progress in key areas, such as new hires and while we are still building our staff team, we've been thrilled about God's provision so far. Of course, there have also been some challenges.

Over the past several months, we've evaluated over 150 venues, including churches, theaters and schools, that would meet our budget, space and accessibility requirements. Two weeks ago, we were about to finalize a contract with a venue, but at the last minute, due to circumstances outside of ours and the venue's control, those plans fell through.

While this is something of a setback, it is also an important reminder that God has a different plan for us than what we had envisioned for that specific space and that serving God anywhere, but particularly in space-constrained New York City, is difficult work. It speaks to the fact that being missional is challenging and yet what drives our love for this city is not our ingenuity but God's own love for the city. We are still working towards a launch this fall and ask that you continue to pray that God provide the right home for us.

We look forward to updating you soon! Until then, stay cool!

In Christ,

John Lin
