Subject: East Side Update
29 July 2012
Eric was born and raised in Seoul, Korea and has been living in New York City since 1984. He started attending Redeemer in 2001 and came to faith at Redeemer. Eric and Caroline, who have been married for 13 years, have both been active in various Redeemer ministries over the years, including children’s ministry, women’s group, legal fellowship and community group leadership. They have two children, Maggie and Peter. Eric is a lawyer, and his favorite pastimes are outdoor running and napping (which he needs to do often owing to his other hobby).
Last week I visited a friend recovering from surgery. In our email exchange, he revealed that he was feeling dejected and discouraged because of his serious injury. As I was walking to his place, I was trying to think of ways I could encourage him while he was experiencing pain and confined to his apartment. To my surprise, he was very positive and cheerful about everything we talked about, which I thought was very unusual for him. I asked him, "What happened since the last time we talked that so much has changed?"
He shared with me was that his attitude toward living in the city had changed. Over the past year, he had been memorizing scripture verses and last week he memorized Jeremiah 29:7. From memory he recited, "But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare." As he was committing the verse to memory each day, it began to powerfully change his heart to love the place God has brought him. I was utterly amazed.
My time with my friend reminded me of the great discipline of committing God's Word to heart every day. It amazes me how God uses it to shape our attitudes, values and even the way we see the world around us. I challenge you, as I've been challenged, to choose verses from scripture that have been important to you and commit one verse to memory each week over the rest of the summer. The psalmist writes,
With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. I rejoice in following your teaching as one rejoices in great riches! -Psalm 119:11-14
I pray that you will know and experience the incomparable riches found in God's word.

East Side PM Information Center
The PM Information Center is looking for people to help guide Redeemer attenders to various ministry opportunities our church has to offer. As a volunteer, you serve once a month after the evening service, and you meet some wonderful people as you help them learn more about our church and its mission.
