John Austin

John Austin and his wife Joanne came to redeemer in 2000 and John has been an elder since 2005.

John and Joanne met at university where they were both involved with Campus Crusade as students. Upon graduation (and marriage) they joined the staff of Campus Crusade. After serving in student ministry for 6 years in Virginia, they moved to West Africa. For the next sixteen years John directed various aspects of the Campus Crusade work, in four different countries. From '92 to '99, John coordinated the International Missions Team at Campus Crusade HQ in FL.  Since 1999, he has been the Executive Director of Christian Embassy, a gospel outreach to diplomats at the UN.

I saw an advertisement for a restaurant recently that simply had the name of the restaurant and the words: Spiritual Dining. It made me wonder if dining at its best isn’t more than a mere material experience. And it made me think about the Lord’s Supper--THE spiritual meal and what it does and doesn’t do.

NYC Relief uses mobile buses to provide food, counseling, spiritual help, and resources to communities in need. Volunteers are needed to serve with the South Bronx Bus on July 14 and Harlem on July 21. HERE for July 14 outreach in S. Bronx; HERE for July 21 outreach in Harlem.

Saturdays, July 14 and August 11 | HFNY: Serve High Tea to Formerly Homeless
12:00PM-2:00PM | Upper East Side

Bake and interact with residents of an UES facility for men and women recovering from homelessness as part of the Saturday High Tea program. This is a long-term, supportive housing facility that houses 65 men and women, the majority of whom are mentally ill and have been chronically homeless. July & August | HFNY: Renovate Garden at Bowery Mission Transitional Center
Volunteer team needed to plan and execute renovation of garden area at the Bowery Mission Transitional Center-- planting flowers, planters, seating… anything to make the space inviting! Need dedicated team to plan the project at the beginning of July and complete it by the beginning of August. HFNY will supply the budget for this project. To volunteer, e-mail

Year-Round | HFNY: Help Bowery Mission with Rooftop Farm
The new rooftop farm at The Bowery Mission will provide fresh produce for the Mission and help insulate the roof and ceiling. Volunteers needed to to 1) Help nurture the farm from the start and/or 2) Commit to helping maintain a healthy plot throughout the year. To volunteer, e-mail

Come out and join East Side families this summer for Tuesday morning playdates in parks around the city. Open to families with children infants through Grade 5.  This week's playdate will be at the East 76th St. Playground.   Contact for more info.

Monday, July 16 | CFW's InterArts Fellowship and Maria Fee's Art Exhibition

On July 16, the Center for Faith & Work's InterArts Fellowship will hold, "The Artist & Eternal Life," a summer art event open to all. This event will celebrate the good news of eternal life by featuring visual, dance and musical works by Redeemer artists Anna Hillengas Troester, James Hall and Maria Fee. Also, Professor of Theology Cherith Fee Nordling will speak on the implication of eternal life in the present lives of artists.  Afterwards, there will be an artist reception for Maria Fee, whose exhibition, "The Secret Garden," has just gone up at W83 and will be featured from July 2 to August 7.
