This Sunday's sermon was about lust- an immediate attention grabber! Lust is a disorder of desire that Jesus described as adultery of the heart. It is not wrong to admire beauty. It is when that appetite, unrestrained, is allowed to grow and become inordinate that lust is born. It is wanting the pleasure without the person: the exact opposite of love. In love you want a person and the pleasure received is a return on that pursuit.
We all struggle with lust, even if the lust isn't sexual in nature. Whenever our heart fixates on something we must have besides God to make us complete we are dealing with the enslaving force of lust. What will help us neutralize such power?
First, we need safe, gospel-centered friendships within the body of Christ to help us deal transparently with such sensitive and vitally important aspects of following Jesus. Second, we need to take gospel repentance seriously. It is the Lord's kindness that leads us to repentance. Any other approach is moralistic, fear-based and doomed to fail.
Finally, we must replace our inordinate desire with a holy one. Our lust grabs hold of something artificial that seems deliciously real in the moment. Instead we need to develop the habit of satisfying our hunger by firing the imagination of our hearts with the glory of God in Jesus.
