Subject: East Side Update- Hurricane Sandy Opportunities
2 November 2012
Jean Soo Park
Jean Soo is a native New Yorker. She has been a member of the same community group for nine years. After working as an attorney for 12 years in the public sector, Jean Soo is now a full-time student at NYU Wagner School for Public Service. She desires to help empower members of marginalized and poor communities (either domestically or internationally) and encourage them to become leaders within their communities. Jean Soo loves to take solo runs through Central Park and use that time to wrestle, repent and reconcile with God. As a deek, she is constantly being reminded that Christ changes His children, and is grateful that God is allowing her to participate and witness His change through the Diaconate.
I hope you and your loved ones are safe as we as a city begin to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As a congregation, we want to be there for each other and I know many of you have helped out to care for your neighbors and friends.
We also want to be aware of how we can serve New York in the wake of this storm. I would ask you to think about the ways God might be calling you to serve through prayer, active service and donations.
-Please pray for the safety of those without shelter in the wake of the storm.
-Please pray for the Church, that we will respond with mercy, compassion, and hospitality and that God would be glorified as we seek to serve our neighbors in need.
-Pray that the Lord will draw many people to himself through this time.
-East Side elected officials are organizing volunteers to reach out to our neighbors, identify needs and provide basic supplies. We will be climbing stairs and knocking on doors today, Friday, November 2nd. If you would like to volunteer, please click HERE for more information.
-Sign up here for alerts and volunteer opportunities related to hurricane recovery. As HFNY identifies the areas of need, we will let you know about opportunities to serve.
-Check the Hurricane Sandy page for ways you can meet specific affiliate needs.
-Hunter College is serving as a Hurricane Evacuation and Special Medical Needs Center for the city. If you're able to volunteer your time, even a couple of hours, you can do so by going to the West Building on the SW side of Lexington and 68th Street and mention that you are from Redeemer.
Donate online to Hurricane Sandy relief fund that the church has set up.
I'd like to leave you with the following scripture during this time for our city:
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you...
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior."
Warmly in Christ,
There Will Be 10:30AM and 6:00PM East Side Services this Sunday
