Subject: East Side Update
8 July 2012
Victor is originally from Long Island and first started coming to Redeemer in 1995 while in college. After moving to Washington DC and Chicago for work and having the opportunity to participate in two church plants, he returned to New York and Redeemer in 2009. He and his wife Alice have been involved with various ministries at Redeemer and are particularly excited about the discipleship program for children launching this fall.
On Wednesday, America observed the Fourth of July, a day to celebrate our freedom as an independent country. Last year, I had the honor of witnessing my husband take his oath of American citizenship along with about 100 other people from every corner of the globe. Some had made huge sacrifices to become Americans, and to them, the Fourth of July is so much more significant than it is for me. I was born a citizen of this country; so were my parents. We knew little of the sacrifices my husband and his fellow immigrants had to make to become American citizens because for us, living in a free country was an unmerited gift. But in spite of this blessing, I often take my freedom for granted and find myself deeply unappreciative of being an American.
As Christians, we have freedom in Christ through no effort of our own. Even our most brilliant acts of obedience fade away into the dark shadows of our sinful nature. But Christ has set us free from sin by the perfect obedience he displayed through his death on the cross. How grievous it is that we so easily become blind to the love and mercy of the One who graciously gave us this gift of freedom!
But if we truly grasped the suffering-love of Christ that sets us free, we would be moved to live radically different lives. We need to constantly work the truth of the gospel message into our hearts to set us free from the worldly things that consume us. And as we do so, our insecurities, anxieties and idolatry will fade away in the light of a man who laid down his life to set us free from the wages of our sin.
And that is a freedom we can never celebrate enough.
