Subject: East Side Update- December 2

Counselor at Redeemer Counseling Services
Sharon has been attending Redeemer with her husband, Max, for 13 years. She has worked as a teacher and school counselor in various public school systems. She also has worked as a counselor in New Jersey and currently at Redeemer Counseling Services. She is proud to be distinguished as one of Redeemer's "seniors" who raises the average age of the congregation. Sharon and Max have two grown, married daughters and three grandchildren.
Perhaps serving on the diaconate seems like a "busman's holiday" for a mental health practitioner. That was a possible concern Sharon voiced when she considered letting her name stand for nomination. However, It seemed logical to follow her heart response to this mercy ministry, especially with the awareness that she had been the recipient of so much from God. After serving for almost four years, she observes that the diaconate has roles that are diverse and allow opportunities for unique gifts and interests. Working and praying together for the people we serve has created a closeness of community life that we have enjoyed.
Sharon enjoys watching "The Good Wife", "Madmen", and "Downton Abbey" and enjoys live theater. Eating ethnic food in her Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood and biking on the Hudson River bikeways are favorite pastimes. And then, of course, there are the grandbabies that need some adventures on the Highline or in the Park. Sometimes, she visits the stroller parking lot at Redeemer just for fun.
My husband and I lived overseas for two years and during that time we began celebrating Christmas in new ways. We lived in a country where Christmas had little emphasis in the culture or meaning to the people. As a result instead of buying presents and getting busy, I spent more time sharing with my friends about the meaning of Christ’s birth and reflecting on it for myself. This clear focus made the whole season full of newfound faith, simplicity, and joy.
I pray you will find faith and joy during Advent. To enhance this season of anticipation in a personal way, please sign up for the Redeemer Advent Meditation. This weekly meditation is for individuals, community groups and families and will be emailed to you on the four Sundays of Advent. Click here to sign up.
I also pray that you will generously love those around you by making Christ clear to them, for example take a friend out for coffee to talk more directly, invite them to your home, or bring them to church. The Lessons and Carols service at Hunter College, December 16th at 9:45 am, 11:30 am or 6:00 pm is one great opportunity where you can bring a friend.
I hope you and yours experience that Jesus is the “Good news of Great Joy which will be for ALL people” (Luke 2:10).
Celebrating Him with you,
